Architecture – What are the replacement of workflow engines?

We are rewriting a large legacy system that uses workflow engines extensively (incorrectly). Looking to the future, I want to consider alternatives to workflow engines for new applications. A A very interesting possibility is the Space-based architecture rule engine. What other examples are there?

I will mention that this application arranges many differently adjusted and complex document publishing workflows according to countries/regions/etc., but if possible, I want to keep the answers more general.

Edit: I added a bounty for this question to get more feedback. I want to hear the opinions of people who actually implement workflow alternatives. If it doesn’t produce any results, I’ll accept BPEL’s answer, though I have no idea about the technology itself.

This seems to be an obvious reaction, but no one else Put it forward, so here it says: Have you considered document (or content) management software?

This seems to be an obvious response, but no one else proposed it, so here it is said: You have considered the document( Or content) management software?
