ASUS RT-AC86U Router AP mode implements multi-router network, extended wireless network scope of the main router

Description:

The router for broadband dial-up Internet access is TP-LINK TL-WAR1200L. Due to the large indoor space, an ASUS RT is connected to this router. -AC86U router;

The configuration makes the network segment of the ASUS router and the TP-LINK router the same, that is, a multi-router network is realized. The IP of the devices connected under the ASUS router are all assigned by TP-LINK.

Solution:

Set the ASUS RT-AC86U router to “Wireless Access Point (AP) Mode / AiMesh Router (AP Mode)”. , As follows:

Open “Advanced Settings” –> “System Management” –> “Operation Mode”:

   share picture

Then change the router’s operating mode to “Wireless Access Point (AP ) Mode / AiMesh Router (AP Mode)”,

Finally, click the “Save” button, and then follow the prompts to configure the router to automatically assign IP and set the name of the wireless network.

Note:

Remember the WAN port address of the ASUS router, and the management address of this router will become this address.

The LAN port of the ASUS router can still be used, and its IP is also assigned by the main router.

Supplement:

ASUS RT-AC86U router has 5 operating modes, the default is wireless routing mode. The function introduction of each operation mode is as follows:

  1. Wireless router mode/ AiMesh router mode (default)

AiMesh router mode is a traditional AiMesh function Mode, you can connect to the Internet through PPPoE, DHCP, PPTP, L2TP or fixed IP. After successfully connecting to the network, the router will share the wireless network with LAN clients or devices. This mode enables NAT, firewall, and DHCP server by default. It also supports UPnP and dynamic DNS, bringing convenience to SOHO and home users. If you are using an ASUS wireless router for the first time, or you are not currently using any wired/wireless router, please select this mode.
You can add AiMesh nodes to form an AiMesh WiFi system, thereby providing a wider range of WiFi coverage.

2, wireless access point (AP) mode/ AiMesh router (AP mode) < /p>

The AiMesh router in AP mode will be connected to another wireless router through a network cable to extend the wireless signal to other network clients. In this mode, the firewall, IP sharing and NAT functions are disabled by default.
You can add AiMesh nodes to form an AiMesh WiFi system, thereby providing a wider range of WiFi coverage.
When AiMesh router is in AP mode, the IP address assigned by DHCP will change. Please install the Device Discovery Utility application to detect the IP address of the wireless router.

  3. Relay mode

In the relay mode, RT-AC86U uses wireless connection to an existing wireless network to extend wireless coverage scope. In this mode, the firewall, IP sharing, and NAT functions are disabled.

  4. Media Bridge

RT-AC86U can be set to wireless bridge (Media Bridge) mode. The Media Bridge mode can provide fast 802.11ac Wi-Fi connections for multiple media devices at the same time. To use the wireless bridge (Media Bridge) mode, you need two RT-AC86Us: one as a Media Bridge and the other as a router. Set one RT-AC86U to router mode, and the other RT-AC86U to 802.11ac wireless bridge (Media Bridge) to provide your media devices such as computers, smart TVs, game terminals, DVRs or media players A parallel 802.11ac Wi-Fi connection. Change to the Media Bridge mode to provide a parallel 802.11ac Wi-Fi connection for your media devices.
In the Media Bridge mode, only wireless devices are connected to the Parent-AP. The client device needs to be connected to the bridge using a network cable.
  5, AiMesh node

You can set this router as an AiMesh node to extend the WiFi coverage of the existing AiMesh router. 1. Factory resetting this router will allow it to be added to an existing AiMesh network. 2. Please go to the AiMesh setting page of the existing router to add an AiMesh node
