Storage – Migrate RAID6 arrays from HP SmartArray P600 to LSI Megaraid SAS 88888888

My customer installed an external RAID6 array (8x 1TB in HP MSA60 chassis) on the HP SmartArray P600 controller. They now decide to replace the server, and the new server is equipped with LSI MegaRAID SAS 8888ELP. The hardware vendor insists that migration is as easy as pulling the eSATA cable from the P600 and inserting it into the LSI, but I don’t believe it. Unfortunately I have nowhere to test and will have to practice on a production array 🙁

So the question is simple-can the RAID6 array created by HP SmartArray P600 be imported into LSI MegaRAID 8888ELP?

No, it’s impossible… HP Smart Array controller and LSI have completely different disk RAID metadata formats.

This won’t work.< /p>

The cable connecting Smart Array P600 and Storageworks MSA60 chassis is not eSATA. It will be SFF-8470->SFF-8088 4-channel SAS cable.

So, what problem do you want to solve You have a new server. Obviously it is not an HP server, so it is wrong to expect you to be able to reconnect to the external storage. However, you can use a modern HP Smart Array controller in the new server to connect to the external storage. HP Smart Array P800 , P411, P212 or P812 RAID controllers will work hard for this purpose.

However, since you are still using the new server, can you choose to use the resources of the new server in order to save the data in the old setting? Copy to a new server? The HP MSA60 storage enclosure is now obsolete. I hope your new server hardware can accommodate larger disks or more suitable external storage settings. You only seem to need 6TB of free space, so copying data is definitely safer , Instead of keeping the old equipment compatible.

Edit:

Especially for ProLiant DL380 G6, you need to use Smart Array P812 control with extra cache and battery You can use both or P212. Both are available/cheaper. Firmware updates are very important to ensure that everything is updated to the correct version. Download the HP Service Pack for ProLiant, and after connecting all Bring the firmware to the correct revision level when you have content. If possible, please make a backup before trying.
